Practical course "Integrative Bioinformatics" (PIBI)

One of the major problems in biological and medical research is to understand the development of cancer from healthy tissue. The mechanisms underlying cancer development are many and by no means fully understood. In order to correlate mutation, gene expression and other types of analysis an integrated approach is needed.

The practical course (Blockpraktikum) deals with the integration of biological data from different sources. The data will be modeled using the Unified Modeling Language (UML), classes will be implemented using a scripting language (PHP or Python), and a MySQL database will be used for data storage and retrieval. Finally, a statistical analysis of the collected data will be performed. In this analysis, a set of differentially expressed genes from existing gene expression data should be identified and "annotated" with secondary information.

The number of participants is limited to 10.

  • You are a bioinformatics student in the Diplom- or Master-Studiengang.
  • You know UNIX systems, at least a bit.
  • Experience in script languages or good programming experience.
  • Practical course: March 15 - 24, 2010.
    A combination with the practical courses Strukturbasierter Wirkstoffentwurf and Software Tools is possible.
